Basic Clinical Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy for ChiropractorsBasic Clinical Massage Therapy

by James H. Clay and David M. Pounds

Rated 4.7 out of 5 stars, there’s little direct information on chiropractic in this volume, but it’s popular among chiropractors who incorporate massage therapy into their practices. In fact, it’s one of the three books that rank highest in the Alternative Medicine – Chiropractic category on Amazon.com.

The second edition of this book (full title: “Basic Clinical Massage Therapy: Integrating Anatomy and Treatment”) is part of the LWW Massage Therapy and Bodywork Educational Series and was published in 2008 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

The text familiarizes students with individual muscles and muscle systems and demonstrates basic clinical massage therapy techniques. More than 550 full-color illustrations of internal structures are embedded into photographs of live models to show each muscle or muscle group, surrounding structures, surface landmarks, and the therapist’s hands.

Readers see clearly which muscle is being worked, where it is, where it’s attached, how it can be accessed manually, what problems it can cause, and how treatment techniques are performed. This edition features improved illustrations of draping and includes palpation for each muscle.

An accompanying Real Bodywork DVD includes video demonstrations of massage techniques from the book.

Be in One Peace

Be in One Peace

by Joanne Messenger, DC

“Be in One Peace: Essential Skills for Thriving in the New World,” is described as a “progressive fusion of ancient, eastern and western philosophy with the modern understanding of energy, anatomy and physiology to support your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.”

Directed at lay readers, it takes the unusual approach of suggesting that the key to happiness is pain, since pain is simply a way to pinpoint mental and physical issues that need to be resolved. “Disease and pain are your body’s way of telling you what is wrong,” says Dr. Messenger. “Pain is a gift. If you didn’t know, you could keep going down paths that aren’t aligned with your soul’s purpose.”

Published by Balboa Press, a division of Hay House, the book explores health topics such as Chakra clearing, mind-body connections, conscious creation, aromatherapy, and energy balancing.

Dr. Joanne Messenger has practiced as a chiropractor, healer and international course facilitator for more than 30 years. She lives in Woodend, Australia and is Australia’s best-known teacher of Chiron philosophies and techniques. She has a bachelor’s degree in applied science, an Excellence Award in radiology, and is certified with the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (USA) and in Sacro-Occipital Technique as well as in practicing and teaching Blueprint Healing. Dr. Messenger is past principal of the Australian Energy School of Chiron and former vice president of the International Association of Chiron Healers, Inc.

You Can Be Well

You Can Be Well

by Stephanie A. Maj, DC

At first glance, this new book by Stephanie A. Maj, DC, who practices in Chicago, covers familiar ground, noting that four of the five critical steps to wellness are nutrition, stress management, exercise, and removing toxicity. Even she admits that there are a million books talking about these factors. “What makes this volume different,” she notes, “is that it spotlights the one critical step omitted by most other books: removing nerve interference.”

Aimed at the general public, the book’s focus on chiropractic as a way to eliminate nerve interference makes it suitable as a patient education tool as well. The overall message is that “Interference in the nervous system causes interference with the body’s ability to heal itself (immune system) and function properly,” and that “you cannot have wellness without chiropractic.”

Initial reviews of the book have been positive, with endorsements from several chiropractic leaders including Janice Hughes, DC, founder of 2inspire, who said of the book: “Follow the path and steps that Dr. Maj creates for you in this book and unleash your full potential.” Dennis Perman, DC, co-founder of The Masters Circle, added his praise, calling Maj a “gifted healer, a superb communicator, and a significant contributor to the wellness landscape.”

Maj is a graduate of National College, served as a member of the World Chiropractic Alliance Council on Women’s Health, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, the International Chiropractors Association, and the National Wellness Foundation.

Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain

Books for Chiropractors: Neuroscience: Exploring the BrainNeuroscience: Exploring the Brain

By Mark F. Bear, et. al.

At first glance, it seems surprising that this book is that it is ranked in the #2 spot on Amazon under the chiropractic section. Yet, with the renewed emphasis of the neurological component of the subluxation, the popularity among DCs of a book about neuroscience makes sense.

The publisher says of this book: “Widely praised for its student-friendly style and exceptional artwork and pedagogy, Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain is a leading undergraduate textbook on the biology of the brain and the systems that underlie behavior. This edition provides increased coverage of taste and smell, circadian rhythms, brain development, and developmental disorders and includes new information on molecular mechanisms and functional brain imaging. Path of Discovery boxes, written by leading researchers, highlight major current discoveries. In addition, readers will be able to assess their knowledge of neuroanatomy with the Illustrated Guide to Human Neuroanatomy, which includes a perforated self-testing workbook.”

Readers give it high praise as well; it has a rating of 4-1/2 out of 5 stars on Amazon. Here are excerpts from some of their reviews:

“If you have been dabbling in cognitive psychology and brain science, have found it interesting and are looking for a broad yet in-depth treatment then this book will not disappoint you. It approaches Neuroscience from every possible angle: you will learn about the anatomy and physiology of the brain and how it produces, controls and mediates the sensory, motor and emotional functions that underlie human experience. The layout of the text is logical, it uses great pedagogical tools, and the writing is concise and informative (if a little dry). Highly recommended as a first textbook for serious study.”

“This book was key for me in undergraduate neurobiology work, and even as a great supplement for graduate studies. It breaks down the neurological system in a clear, concise, and simple method, using excellent diagrams, illustrations. It actually simplifies neuroscience and I found it easier to understand than some of my more in-depth graduate books.”

“The textbook makes an excellence use of multimedia and in-text graphics. This is a very visual textbook, which aids in the student’s ability to understand the concepts discussed. The content isn’t precisely specific, but there is enough scientific content to satisfy those interested in the physiology of the brain.”

This edition’s ancillary package includes a bound-in student CD-ROM, an Instructor’s Resource CD-ROM, and resources online.

A Life of Wellness

A Life of Wellness

by Marty Finkelstein, DC

Like so many other doctors of chiropractic, Marty Finkelstein, DC, was introduced tGuildelines for Avoiding Illness -- Books by chiropractorso the profession as a patient, despite the fact that he was a pre-med student at the time. After being told he would have to “live with” ulcerative colitis and take drugs the rest of his life to control symptoms, he went to a chiropractor. “I remember lying on the table, being examined, as the doctor explained about illness and wellness,” Dr. Finkelstein recalls. “Instead of learning to live with the problems, he spoke about correcting the cause of the conditions. He shared about holistic wellness and how spiritual, physical, and emotional healing was all integrated. Everything he said made perfect sense.”

Thirty years later, his book, “A Life of Wellness: Guidelines For Avoiding Illness,” is his way of passing along the lessons he’s learned in three decades of being a holistic chiropractor. “As doctors, we can assist our patients the most when they are involved in the responsibility and understanding of their own health,” he notes.

In place of lengthy text, Finkelstein has used 127 concise precepts, each on a single page and ranging from one to three paragraphs. The entries are written in a simple style and promote wellness, a healthful lifestyle, chiropractic, and other non-medical approaches to well being.

Finklestein is the author of several other books including “Divorce: An Uncommon Love Story,” “8 Lessons of Life on Hole 1,” and “The Seven Gifts.”
